Music as Puppetry

Get ready for Music as Puppetry!
I'm James Watson, and I'm thrilled to join forces with the talented Dance Artist, Jocelyn Mah, to bring you an innovative music-movement-mask collaboration like no other.
Let me tell you a bit about ourselves. I'm a professional freelance musician with a passion for the violin. I graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelors of Music and a Minor in Linguistics back in 2020.
Meanwhile, Jocelyn Mah is a force to be reckoned with. She's a graduate of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre and holds a Master of Arts in Contemporary Dance from London Contemporary Dance School. Jocelyn's expertise lies in the captivating arts of dance, mask, and puppetry – a true artist in every sense.
Together, Jocelyn and I have crafted an extraordinary experience that delves into the mesmerizing relationship between music and movement.
Our interdisciplinary collaboration brings together a rich blend of contemporary and folk/jazz idioms. We've carefully crafted a joint vocabulary that allows us to seamlessly merge our artistic worlds, creating a performance that's both visually and sonically stunning.
Now, I don't want to be overly passionate, but trust me when I say that Music as Puppetry is a one-of-a-kind spectacle that you don't want to miss. It'll be an evening filled with artistic exploration and pure delight.

Melody Stang
7:45- 8:20
I'm so pleased to be part of Sunnyside Summer Nights' final show on September 6th.
I’m Melody Stang, a Calgary-based musician and performer with a lot of stage time under my belt. You might have caught me before under different names, but this time, it's all about the heartfelt melodies and heavy-hitting strums.
I love weaving together ballads and energetic tunes that will have you both moving and grooving. And between songs, we’ll chat like old friends, honest and charming, and share stories that might just bring a smile to your face.
I take inspiration from musical legends like Joni Mitchell and Fleetwood Mac, so you can expect some well-crafted lyrics with catchy melodies and clever chords. While I may be known as a "Singer," my true passion lies in being a "Songwriter."
In 2018, I released my first solo EP, "Wrong Side of the Moon," and I couldn't be prouder of it. One of the tracks, 'Carousel Ride,' was produced and recorded at Red Deer’s Melodious Design/The Space. The EP even earned a nomination for singer/songwriter of the year at Red Deer's Entertainment Awards. I'm truly grateful for the love and support!
Here’s what the folks at Music Canada Blog had to say about it: "'Wrong Side of the Moon' is soaked in good feels with nice backing vocals and chill-out string strums. Torrents of atmosphere thanks to smart production and the use of synths. Melody Stang is an artist to watch given this first-rate EP."
So there’s that.
I can't wait to share my tunes with all of you at Sunnyside Summer Nights. So mark your calendars for September 6th, bring your friends and family, and let's make it a memorable night together.
Melody
Tonight's Performance - Sept 6 Cancelled due to Rain.. ;(
Just remember we had a ton of music when it didn't, so see you next Sunnyside Summer!
Long Time No Time - Headliner 8:30 - 9:15PM
Guess what? It's Long Time No Time here, and we're absolutely stoked to be headlining the final show at Sunnyside Summer Nights on September 6th!
First off, ever wonder how we got our quirky name? Well, it all started with a bizarre voicemail message left on Daniel Pelton's cell phone – one of those "you had to be there" moments. But hey, it stuck with us, and we thought it was pretty fitting for our fun-loving crew.
Now, let's talk music. We're a Calgarian 5 piece horn band, and our lineup includes drums, electric bass, bass trombone, alto sax, trumpet, and some killer harmony vocals. We're not your typical band, though – no guitars or keys here. We march to the beat of our own horns, literally!
What sets us apart is our academic musical background. Yep, we're a bunch of music school nerds from UofC, and we're not ashamed to admit it. We channel our knowledge and expertise to explore those catchy pop music tropes, but with a twist of technique and precision that's uniquely ours.
Our mission is simple – to get you grooving and moving on the dance floor! We write original songs crafted specifically for cool folks like you to dance your hearts out. Whether you're into jazz, funk, or just want to have a good time, we've got something for everyone.
One thing's for sure – at our show, there won't be a single person standing still. So, if you're up for a night of infectious beats and feel-good tunes, make sure to mark September 6th on your calendar.
Oh, and, full disclosure, there's a strong connection between LTNT and Keith of Keith's Hootenanny. Keith met LTNT leader Daniel Pelton when Daniel was playing soprano sax (as he did from time to time) at an early U of C Jazz band concert about 5 years ago. They've been pals ever since. And Keith's got to meet the rest of the band members too, which is cool for cats like Keith.
And Fletcher, their drummer, has lent his kit to SSN for the whole season, paying it forward to all the other drummers who didn't have to haul their kit to the stage! Thanks Fletcher!
Join us at Sunnyside Summer Nights and be a part of the Long Time No Time experience. We can't wait to see your smiling faces in the crowd!
See you there,
Long Time No Time
